Sande Ace Rendezvous 2010

It had to happen.  After nice weather for the first five Rendezvous, it was cool, wet and windy this time.  The wind was the biggest problem for the mostly flat bottoms of the Aces.  They slap hard when going into waves.  But they put out a big spray when going with the wind and that spray usually blows back into our faces.

We met again at Twanoh State Park for the morning launch.

Allan and Bea Sande showed up at the ramp.  Here they are
with Bruce, Bob and Ned.  Look at those Sande Ace caps!

Allan Sande told stories and enjoyed the vintage products of his labor.

Ned's Sande Ace.

Bob's Ace restoration was finished last year but since the motor was not quite ready,
he had to trailer it to the backyard.   This was his first time on thewater with the Aces.

Tom and Susanne brought Scooter with its reliable Mark 35A.

Ed came by water but Linda and the grandkids decided to stay home because of the wind which was blowing on the far side of Sisters' Point.  The fenders are made from the flotation of an old ski belt.  Remember ski belts?

Chris again brought "No Go Ocean." He's looking for more horsepower
and we would advise Mercury horsepower.

Ty brought a neat boat closely resembling a modified original 12-foot Ace.  Its beveled chines and basic construction is very much like the Ace.  It zipped right along with its 25 HP Merc but the waves shortened his stay on the Canal.  Maybe next year we'll get to see more of his boat.

Bruce S. built this boat to resemble the AristoCraft runabout of the 1950s.   It was a hit of the Rendezvous.  Its 25 HP Mercury with SS prop really made it go!

Bruce L. brought his PowerCat to the ramp but could not bring it along on the cruise.  It's twin Merc 400's with 15-inch pitch props cupped to an equivalent of 16.5" were unbelievable.

Look at this beautiful Merc 400!

Tom and Susanne launched for a spin around Twanoh but couldn't cruise
because of a previous commitment at the Grapeview Days celebration.

No, Bruce S. didn't ram the dock.  It's just his convenient way to tie up after he's out of the boat.

After a windy, wet and very cold cruise to Alderbrook and Union, we returned to the Waali place.
Linda, Helen and Zack were there to greet us.

If we weren't cold enough, we needed to wade around in the water to anchor the boats.

Bob brought his second (yes, he has 2!!)  Sande Ace to the backyard.  Mostly complete, it has since been sold!

Brad Carlson brought his beautifully restored 1956 Century runabout to the backyard.
We would have loved to follow him in the windy cruise from Twanoh but a fuel problem needed a solution first.

Ned and Bob are starting a modification on Brad's Century to produce the beveled chines of the Sande Ace .

Ned had acquired a set of Ace plans which were originally available from the Boat Builder's Handbook.
He gave out copies of these to the Ace guys.  Here he is with Earl Sande and Bob.  Thanks, Ned!
