Scott Hushour Builds an Original Ace.
Scott lives in central Ohio about 45 miles south of Lake Erie. One of the advantages of living close to the Great Lakes is the availability of marine plywood nearby. He has been in the woodworking industry since high school and had done some work on a few old Lyman boats which were built in Sandusky, Ohio but this was his first attempt to completely build a boat.
The frame, made of sassafras, is begun in August, 2011.
Scott mounted a classic red Johnson just to see what it would look like.
The frame is complete and the planking using A/B marine fir is underway.
By early October, the hull is planked and Scott uses his 1957 Evinrude Fastwin 18 on it to mock up the steering, controls and seats. Having a fully equiped wood shop at his disposal is keeps the project on the fast track.
It's mid-October, 2011. The seats, steering and controls are mocked up ready for disassembly and painting of the interior. Scott hopes to soon fiberglass the hull and decks. After that, he will repaint the motor and get a trailer so he can launch as soon as Old Man Winter loosens his grip in April.
